What has a radio station got to do with the health of older people?

When Angel Radio first went on air in 1999 with its broadcasts for older people we had no idea that there would be an immediate response from listeners saying how much better they felt after hearing programmes featuring old 78rpm records and reminiscences of local people.

The fact that many older people were brought up with the wireless as their main entertainment in the 1920s, 30s and 40s means that it, and the programmes of the day, hold a special place in their hearts and minds. Adding the fact that in the 1960s popular radio came under the rule of trendy youngsters who "allowed" old records from the 1920s, 30s 40s, and 50s to be played for only two or three hours a week, means that people have been starved of 'proper music with proper songs' for far too long.

When an older person hears a record from 'the good old days' it can trigger many positive responses. We receive so many letters, phone calls and emails from listeners telling us how our programmes have a positive effect on their mental and physical health.

Angel Radio, although not a cure, has a profound effect on older people with brain dysfunction such as Alzheimers and dementia. People who do not know where, or even who they are, often remember every word of an old song. They smile, sing along, and show positive reactions.
